"Uma Manifesta Acção"

CRUZES+VARGAS, a duo of Portuguese artists with a longstanding collaboration, invited Joel to participate in an exhibition they had planned. They also enlisted curator Claudia Melo, known for her work with the event Contextil, to be part of the project. After numerous Zoom meetings and with the exhibition titled “Uma Manifesta Acção”, Joel travelled to Lagos, Portugal, to create his intervention at the “Lagos Cultural Centre” (CCL). The installation is constructed from pine wood planks sourced from Joel’s family’s workshop/retail store. This is relevant to his ongoing artistic practice that uses memories attached to personal experiences, materials and spaces. The installation, towering at 3 meters high and measuring 130x130cm, was arranged around a column within the gallery space.
